Bridgefest

Bridgefest was a three day nationally televised festival held by Strait Crossing Inc in association with the government of Prince Edward Island to celebrate the opening of the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island. The challenge presented on this project was to develop a unified theme for several visual elements for an eight-acre festival site. These elements included a key event illustration, a large rock and roll stage, an event signage and way finding plan, an event pageantry plan, and, last but not least, a set of mascot costumes. It was our task to develop an overall look for the site as well as for these elements. Because the Bridge was a source of division within the Province, we were also mandated to be especially sensitive to the political and community issues surrounding this project.

The concept the producers for the festival chose for the project was to use the Bridge as a metaphor for the connections within the community between the past, the present, and the future. The theme chosen for the project was “a bridge to the future, a link to the past”. Working from this theme we connected the Bridge’s shape to the Island’s history. Through this juxtaposition we reflected a sense of the Island’s potential while honouring it’s past.

The Bridgefest stage was 185’ feet wide x 85 feet tall. Due to the extreme winds on the Borden, PEI site it was anchored to the ground using 7, 8 foot cement piers.

The look of the stage tied into the rest of the site. The event key illustration was used over all aspects of the site from the signage and way finding program to the pageantry that dressed the rest of the site. A playful, colourful style was developed for the look of all these elements in response to the festive, family oriented nature of the event. The result was a unified look that tied together the entire festival in a meaningful yet playful way.

Three event mascot characters were developed to brand the event while also enteraining crowds.
